Twente have signed 33-year-old striker Wout Weghorst on a two-year contract at the club where Erik ten Hag is technical director, closing off a potential route for Marco Silva’s Benfica and pushing them towards other attacking options.

The Dutch forward left Ajax at the end of his contract after two seasons, during which he scored 20 goals in 65 appearances.

He is currently with the Netherlands squad at the World Cup and is still awaiting his first minutes at the tournament.

Weghorst had been considered by Benfica, particularly under former coach José Mourinho, but is not viewed as a priority by the hierarchy at this stage of the market.

Marco Silva considers the required striker profile to be identified and under control, though the club are keeping Weghorst’s name under review should their plan shift towards a different type of attacker.

Benfica now prioritise other options for the forward line, with Cruzeiro goalscorer Kaio Jorge added to the list, and squad planning continues for the 2026/27 season.
