Girona FC presented Marc Ter Stegen this Thursday as their new red-and-white player in an event at Montilivi that highlighted the Club's current growth. The president, Delfí Geli, stated that the arrival of the German goalkeeper confirms the ambition of the project and emphasized that he is one of the best players in the world and serves as a role model for many young players. He explained, “Being able to bring in a professional like Ter Stegen makes us reflect on Girona's sporting moment and on objectives that include staying at the top of Spanish and European football.”
The sporting director, Quique Cárcel, added that “the goalkeeper's level is indisputable and that he fully fits with the team's style of play.” He acknowledged that Ter Stegen is considered one of the best players on the planet and expressed that “his profile naturally aligns with the style of play practiced by Girona.”
Ter Stegen, who appeared smiling and excited in his first press appearance as a new red-and-white player, explained that the initial talks did not guarantee that his signing would be possible, but eventually all parties agreed and reached a deal. He admitted that when the real opportunity to come to Girona arose, he and his entourage did not hesitate.
The goalkeeper explained that he arrives with a clear desire to play and compete, as any footballer would, and that from the first day he has felt very welcomed by the group. He stated that, although he has only been in the city for two days, he already feels at home. “I want to integrate as soon as possible. He highlighted that he found a locker room full of confidence and determination, and that one must give their all on the field to meet the level demanded by the competition.
He also referred to his first conversations with Míchel, which he described as exceptional, and highlighted the passion for football that the coach conveys, an aspect he found even more motivating for his new challenge. “He has a great passion for football, and I love that.”
All of this comes after overcoming an injury that kept him off the field; Ter Stegen assures that he feels one hundred percent, has set personal goals, and is seeking consistency.
On a more personal note, he admitted that leaving FC Barcelona was a profound and emotionally challenging change after years of sharing the locker room and being the captain. However, he emphasized that the welcome in Girona has been excellent and that some of the more experienced players have greatly facilitated his adaptation.
He also recalled Éric Garcia's experience at Girona, a case he knows well and which served as a reference for him. He explained that the defender spoke very highly of the Club and its operations and that his trajectory at Montilivi could be a good example for the new Girona goalkeeper. “A few days ago, we talked, and he told me it would be great,” he said.
Regarding his possible debut, Ter Stegen commented that he is already preparing to play on Monday, although the final decision rests with the coach. He committed to working to be available whenever the team needs him and expressed absolute respect for the work his fellow goalkeepers have done so far, while reminding that they all share the same goal.
He concluded his speech by assuring that his ambition is the same as that of the locker room: to win every match and compete at the highest level, a challenge he approaches with great enthusiasm.
