Liverpool appear to be closing in on securing one of the most important pieces of business of the summer, with Dominik Szoboszlai reportedly set to sign a new contract after months of negotiations.
Speaking on the latest Anfield Index podcast, Gags Tandon was joined by Bence Bocsak of Anfield Watch, who revealed the latest information from his Hungarian sources regarding the Liverpool midfielder’s future.
Bocsak explained that the story first emerged in Hungary before Anfield Watch became the first English language outlet to report it.
“I had word from Hungarian sources and we at Anfield Watch, I think, were the first English publication to report it,” Bocsak said, while also acknowledging the Hungarian Facebook page that initially published the information.
He also pointed to growing confidence as respected Liverpool reporters began publishing similar information.
“I think we can pretty much say it’s going to happen. Dominik Szoboszlai is going to sign a new contract with Liverpool.”
Importantly, Bocsak stressed that the agreement had not yet been formally signed, but significant progress had been made.
“The terms have been agreed. There’s been negotiations for eight months,” he explained, before adding that he expected the contract to be signed quickly after Szoboszlai’s representatives travelled to Merseyside.
Much of the discussion centred on why Liverpool have been so determined to tie Szoboszlai down to a new contract.
Drawing on years of following the midfielder’s career with Hungary, Bocsak described a player who has repeatedly delivered under pressure.
“He is a leader. He’s a man for the big moments,” he said.
Bocsak recalled how Szoboszlai “scored the goal to qualify Hungary for their first European Championship in decades” and argued that the same mentality has become evident at Liverpool.
“I think that’s what he did for Liverpool last season… everyone was not performing to their best standards, but he was. I think that’s a marker of his character.”
The Anfield Watch journalist even looked further ahead, suggesting the Hungarian international could eventually wear the captain’s armband.
“I think he’s definitely the candidate for the vice captaincy… and when Virgil van Dijk leaves, he’s going to be a pretty strong candidate for the captaincy as well.”

Tandon was equally enthusiastic about the reported breakthrough, arguing that supporters should fully appreciate the midfielder’s commitment to Liverpool.
“What I don’t want to see is him at right back anymore. He was brilliant, but he was doing a shift for the club.”
He praised Szoboszlai’s willingness to fill multiple roles across the pitch.
“He literally didn’t complain. He went and played at right back, right wing, left wing, he did a DM role, he did the normal midfield, he played ten. What more could you want from a player?”
Tandon also urged supporters to rally behind the Hungary captain.
“Everyone should be right behind this guy,” he said, before adding that “he doesn’t have a song yet” and joking that Liverpool fans should finally create one for him.
If completed, a new contract for Dominik Szoboszlai would represent a significant boost for Liverpool ahead of the Andoni Iraola era.
Bocsak revealed that the agreement is expected to run “until at least 2030”, giving Liverpool long term security around one of their most influential players.
The discussion on Anfield Index consistently returned to one central theme. Liverpool are securing the future of a player they believe can become a leader both on and off the pitch.
With negotiations reportedly agreed in principle and confidence growing from both Hungarian and Liverpool based sources, the expectation shared by Bence Bocsak and Gags Tandon is that official confirmation is now only a matter of time.
