Lennart Karl has given FC Bayern the lead in their home game against Mainz 05, setting a new Bundesliga goalscoring record for the 17-year-old
A slipped cross from Harry Kane, which landed via Serge Gnabry to Lennart Karl, gave FC Bayern a 1-0 lead in their home game against Mainz 05 and also set a new Bundesliga record. Karl’s goal is Bayern’s 50th goal of the season – never before has a team reached this mark on matchday 14
Karl has now scored four goals in his last five starting appearances, making it clear just how important he is to FC Bayern. In the absence of Luis Díaz and the still-injured Jamal Musiala, he has become a real back-up for the German record champions
Incidentally, in addition to the goal record, Munich could also set a passing record against Mainz. 548 passes were played by Bayern in the first half. The current record is 981 passes played – set by Bayer Leverkusen against Fortuna Düsseldorf in 2019
FCB are therefore well on course to break the record. However, it will be much more important for Vincent Kompany and his team to beat Mainz, who are bottom of the table. Mainz equalised through Kacper Potulski shortly before the break with their only shot on goal.
