“That’s Nonsense” – Sheffield United Gaffer Makes Strong Remarks After Blades Fall in Cup | OneFootball

Sheffield United crashed out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat away at Fleetwood Town.

Chris Wilder made a number of changes to his starting XI for the third-round clash, but the Blades were unable to find the performance required to progress at Highbury Stadium.

United had chances to make the breakthrough during the contest, but Fleetwood proved stubborn defensively and ultimately secured a memorable victory after a huge slice of fortune helped them take the lead.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 57th minute. Andrew delivered a deep cross into the Sheffield United penalty area from the left, but the ball took an unfortunate deflection off Norrington-Davies. The change in direction completely wrong-footed Michael Cooper and the ball nestled into the bottom corner.

It was a desperately unlucky moment for the Blades, but Fleetwood sensed an opportunity to put the tie beyond their visitors. The hosts immediately pushed for a second, with McCann meeting another dangerous delivery from Mark Helm. His header, however, lacked the necessary direction to trouble Cooper, who gathered comfortably.

Fleetwood then thought they had doubled their advantage when Loupalo-Bi finished from close range. The celebrations were short-lived, though, as the forward had strayed beyond the last defender and the effort was ruled out for offside.

United were given another major warning shortly afterwards. In the 72nd minute, Fleetwood produced a frantic attacking passage which saw both McCann and Andrew strike the woodwork in quick succession. The Blades somehow survived as the hosts came remarkably close to finding a second goal.

United desperately needed somebody to produce a moment of quality at the other end. Sydie Peck almost provided it when the midfielder let fly from around 25 yards. His effort appeared destined for the top-left corner, but the Fleetwood goalkeeper produced an outstanding save to preserve his side’s advantage.

The Blades continued to push as the clock ticked down. Ayew took advantage of a defensive mistake and worked his way into a dangerous position before attempting to tee up Cannon. The striker appeared to have a golden opportunity to finally break Fleetwood’s resistance, only for former Sheffield United defender Potter to throw himself in front of the ball and make a superb block.

Speaking to SUTV after the final whistle, Wilder was blunt in his assessment of his team’s performance.

The Blades boss admitted that his side failed to follow the plan after the interval and were punished for a poor start to the second half.

“First 10 minutes of the second half just went off plan. We thought that the game would come to us, they sniffed it. The first goal is horrendous from our point of view; the amount of mistakes that we made. Players wanted to do their own thing, for the first half we were okay, we created some good opportunities. They obviously had some opportunities themselves. Not a crystal ball, but through experience and knowledge that we know that we have to get out of the trap second half, we have to go through the gears a little bit, we have more gears in us and we decided to take a backwards step.

The goal absolutely sums us up. Three or four mistakes in there and an own goal that gives them a huge lift. I told them at half time you know this is what can happen if we don’t start the second half on the front foot and if we go off plan. Players wanted to go off plan but we have to own it, it’s an incredibly disappointing night regardless of the amount of changes that we made. That’s nonsense that same team out there has been good enough to beat Blackburn, and should have been good enough to to win tonight and we haven’t; we have to pay the ultimate consequence.”

Wilder on Players Not Taking Opportunities

Wilder acknowledged that Fleetwood were able to feed off the momentum provided by their goal, while also accepting that United had not done enough to warrant progression.

“You give the home team a massive amount of energy because they’ve got so much to hang on to. We’ve had some opportunities at the end. They’ve had a couple of opportunities, they’ve had a goal disallowed as well. And for me, we have to own it, I have to own it, it’s my team and we didn’t deserve to go through.”

The Sheffield United manager was particularly critical of the players who had been handed an opportunity to impress, making it clear that he expected more from those looking to force their way into his Championship side.

“We’ve let a lot of people down tonight. There’s a lot of players that have had the opportunities tonight to stake a claim, as always when you’ve got a squad of players, Championship players when they’re not playing they’ll have an opinion, they’ll be the victim you know, ‘why am I not being given an opportunity, why am I only getting 10 or 15 minutes’, and those opportunities presented themselves for players tonight and they’ve certainly just not taken them.”

Sheffield United crash out of the cup in disappointing fashion, but they must pick themselves up and go again at the weekend ready to face Stoke City away from home on Saturday afternoon.
