Big changes could be coming to the Plymouth Argyle squad next summer, regardless of how the team performs in League One this season.
With many players due to fall out of contract next summer, there could be big changes coming to Plymouth Argyle's squad next summer, regardless of how they perform in League One this season.
Following relegation from the Championship at the end of the 2024-25 season, Plymouth Argyle had work to do on their first-team squad ahead of the new season. That season hasn't started terribly impressively, but regardless of how they end up performing this season, the Pilgrims could have a lot of change coming throughout the summer of 2026.
Plymouth have 11 players falling out of contract next summer, including a couple of big-hitting names, so let's take a look at who could be leaving the club next summer and who could be staying.
Veteran attacking midfielder Jamie Paterson signed for Argyle last summer after being released by Coventry City, and while details of his contract at Home Park haven't been publicised, at 33 years old it's most likely that his contract will only last the duration of this season. At the time of writing, Paterson has only been used sparingly by Argyle, from the bench only.
One of the more intriguing questions that Argyle will face next summer will concern right-back and club captain Joe Edwards, who signed a one-year contract extension during the summer to keep him at Home Park until next summer.
Edwards is Plymouth Argyle royalty, with over 200 appearances for the club since he first signed for them from Walsall in 2019, but he turns 35 years of age at the end of October, and this may end up being his last season with the club. Edwards has also had a stop-start 2025-26 so far, missing three weeks with a hamstring injury in August and then earning a three-match suspension after getting sent off in September.
Goalkeeper Conor Hazard was given the number one shirt by Plymouth in the summer, but he hasn't been Argyle's first choice for most of this season. He came back into their first team following a long-term injury at the end of September, and put in decent appearances in his first two appearances of the season against Burton Albion and Wigan Athletic, only conceding once in those two fixtures and earning himself decent Sofascore ratings in the process. He replaced Luca Ashby-Hammond for these games, leaving manager Tom Cleverley with something of a dilemma.
Young midfielder Ayman Benarous signed for the Pilgrims in the summer on a free transfer after being released by Bristol City. He's not been a regular in their first-team this season - with more appearances from the bench than in their starting eleven - and it was slightly surprising to see them take on a 22-year-old on only a one-year contract. He's acquitted himself reasonably in League One, and the club may look to extend next summer.
Forward Bim Pepple was sent out on loan five times by Luton Town over the three years that he was at Kenilworth Road before signing for Plymouth for an undisclosed fee during the summer. Pepple has already been the subject of racist abuse on social media this season, with Tom Cleverley making a point of saying how impressed he was by the player's reaction to it.
Pepple has been a regular starter for the Pilgrims this season, but given that this abuse seems to have come from supporters of his own club - it was the second time this season that this has happened, with Brendan Wiredu having also been targetted, earlier in the season - whether he'll want to stay at Home Park beyond the end of his contract may be considered an open question.
Wing-back Matty Sorinola was once a very sought-after name. Southampton were among the clubs he was linked to, prior to his move to Home Park in January 2024. Sorinola has been a regular starter for Argyle, both last season and this, and it would be expected that the club will want to extend his contract come the end of this season.
Goalkeeper Ashby-Hammond signed for the club during the summer after impressing on trial, and started the season as in the first eleven because of the injury to Conor Hazard. Now Hazard has returned, though Ashby-Hammond is likely to return to the bench. HIs contract was only for a year, and he may decide that his future may be best served elsewhere, if he's to get regular football. In the meantime, though, he needs to keep fighting for his place.
Galloway signed a two-year extension on his contract in 2024 which expires next summer, and according to Salary Sport his income jumped from £2,500-a-week to £5,500-a-week for having done so. But injuries have been a significant issue. He missed the second half of last season with a leg injury that required surgery, but he's been back in the first team in 2025-26 and was the captain for a couple of games, and with almost 100 League appearances under his belt it's likely they'll want to extend again rather than letting him go come the end of this season.
Hungarian international Szucs, who can play at centre-back, right-back and as a right wing-back, signed for Plymouth in 2024 and is a reasonably regular starter in the Plymouth first team. He's already made almost 50 appearances for Argyle, and his versatility will be valued by the club. It may be reasonably assumed that Argyle will not want to let a 24-year-old international player leave for nothing at the end of his contract, so this may be another player whose contract Argyle look to extend before the end of this season.
The third goalkeeper to appear on this list, Baker is a Home Park academy graduate who received a contract extension to the end of the 2025-26 season in March 2025. He's sat on the bench a few times for the club, but is yet to have made a first team appearance for them. He's also spent time out on loan in the non-league game before, and with Conor Hazard and Luca Ashby-Hammond battling it out to be their first choice stopper, he may find himself on loan again before the end of this season.
