Internally Chelsea don’t expect to be in a position to win the Premier League come the end of the season according to The Athletic.
Chelsea went unbeaten in November and put in some impressive performances, but December got off to the worst possible start.
The Blues put in a terrible performance on Wednesday evening and lost 3-1 against Leeds at Elland Road, a result which sees them drop to fourth.
Chelsea headed into the game six points behind leaders Arsenal, but they are now nine points behind the Gunners.
The Blues are also four points behind Manchester City in second and three behind Aston Villa in third, and need to be careful they don’t get sucked into a top four battle.

Maresca wasn’t impressed with the performance against Leeds, and it certainly highlighted why many have dismissed Chelsea as serious title contenders.
John Terry labelled Chelsea as poor, and the Blues need to respond and get back on track against Bournemouth on Saturday, with seven more games left in December across all competitions.
The Club haven’t challenged for or won a Premier League since Antonio Conte in 2017, and that doesn’t look like ending anytime soon.
However, The Athletic have once again reported that internally Chelsea don’t expect to be in a position to win the league come May, and the target is very much a top four finish.
A lot has been made of the amount of rotation Chelsea have made this season, and it’s needed to an extent given their exploits at the Club World Cup.

However, the rotation has arguably exposed the squad depth isn’t as good as people perhaps initially thought, with too many players not of the standard required right now.
Any rotation at centre back seems to be disastrous, and there’s a real lack of chemistry in attack, which perhaps isn’t a surprise given it was totally revamped over the summer, but Chelsea have got to find ways to improve otherwise it could be a long season.
