Welcome to today’s exclusive & comprehensive round-up of all things Bayern Munich from Bayern insider Christian Falk. Featuring updates on Nico Schlotterbeck, Dayot Upamecano, Harry Kane and Lennart Karl.

Today’s top stories

It was great to see Jamal Musiala score for FC Bayern once again! It was one of my favourite goals of this Champions League campaign from Bayern Munich. Tom Bischoff initiated the move, then it went through Lennart Karl before falling to Musiala to score. So a combination made with three young Bayern players – none of whom cost the club a transfer fee!

I heard that Vincent Kompany was feeling really confident in the dressing room after the 2-1 win over PSV Eindhoven; he’s very glad that Musiala is back in action and was very complimentary of the way he played. So, the attacking midfielder will be fit for the rest of the 2025/26 season and also for the World Cup with Germany!

There’s also been some good news off the pitch with the club finishing third in the Deloitte Money League. Bayern Munich are very proud of the fact that they earn their own money – there is no outside investment. Of course, like many clubs, they have big partners and big commercial deals. So, this is the secret of Bayern: they have money, but they also spend a lot of money on the squad. Indeed, the squad is one of the highest-paid in Europe.

The accusation that’s sometimes thrown at FC Bayern is that they can’t pay for one big player like Erling Haaland. No, they don’t, but they do pay for a lot of players at a very high level. So, the plan remains to reduce the squad cost – so no big investments in the next summer transfer window.

Spanish outlet Fichajes claimed that Bayern are planning to spend €200m [£173.3m] in the summer. This is a firm NOT TRUE. Bayern Munich are searching for a left winger – they’ll spend money on this position. That’s where the “big money”, so to speak, will be spent. Then the other positions should be a little cheaper.

Jérémy Jacquet

Bayern Munich are not a big competitor for Jérémy Jacquet’s signature. They know him, and he has a market for the summer, but Bayern are not, at the moment, involved in negotiations. This means there’s a big chance for the Premier League. He’s a player who has an exciting future in the game. I believe it will cost around €50m [£43.3m] to buy him. Bayern are still waiting and won’t invest now in the Rennes star. So, I think there’s a pretty good chance for Chelsea.

Could Bayern steal Josh Acheampong from Chelsea?

It is TRUE: Bayern Munich are keeping track of Josh AcheampongThe Chelsea centre-back fits the kind of profile the Bavarians are looking for. He’s 19 years old, he’s not so expensive, and has genuine quality for the future. Of course, Bayern are still planning with Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan in the defence. So, they don’t want to bring someone in who’s looking to immediately start in the backline. That’s why players like Acheampong are interesting for FC Bayern. I heard that last summer Bayern also showed interest in the teenager, but, at the moment, they have to wait to see what Upamecano decides to do.

Will Nico Schlotterbeck stay at Borussia Dortmund?

It is TRUE: Nico Schlotterbeck has set himself a deadline to decide on his future at Borussia Dortmund. His family, as we know, are big fans of Bayern Munich. They’re hoping that Bayern could come and say, “Hey, we need you now!” but they won’t do so if Dayot Upamecano signs the contract offer on the table. Bayern are waiting on this decision – and it’s also a big question for Schlotterbeck whether Upamecano will extend his stay in Munich.

What’s going on with Dayot Upamecano’s contract?

It is TRUE: Bayern Munich have set a deadline for Dayot Upamecano to decide on his contract future. I heard just yesterday that he’s going to have to hurry up with this decision, as we heard the date of the deadline is this Sunday (February 1). So, the centre-back doesn’t have a lot of time left to decide!

Sacha Boey says “no” to the Premier League

It is TRUE: Sacha Boey is refusing offers from the Premier League. It’s really frustrating for Bayern Munich. They want to sell him, and they don’t know why he’s saying no to the offers on the table. Olympique Lyonnaise came up with a really concrete offer for the defender, and he said “no”, he won’t agree to this. He’s also not open-minded to the interest from the Premier League. At Bayern, he’s earning about €3m [£2.6m] a year, so perhaps this is the reason why he wants to stay put.

We’ve also heard that Boey changed his management team. He was previously with Stellar – a big agency in England – and they were also not pleased with the fact that he was stalling on signing for another club. The fullback also decided now would be the right time to try something new, so he’s since joined Moussa Sissoko’s agency. Sissoko is known for being a pretty straight talker – not every club is very happy if they have negotiations with him.

Don’t forget that one of his clients is Ousmane Dembélé. There are, at the moment, also problems at PSG; the Paris-based outfit says there are problems with the forward’s demands, which are reportedly far too high (we heard about €60m [£52m] a year, when he’s currently earning €18m [£15.5m]), and he’s already the top earner. Sissoko is also the agent of Upamecano.

Tottenham enter the fray for Leon Goretzka

It is TRUE: Tottenham wanted to hijack the deal for Leon Goretzka. We shared the exclusive story on Tuesday that Atletico Madrid’s sporting director, Mateu Alemany, was already in Munich for negotiations. It seemed like a deal would happen, as Atletico were very concrete on the matter, and were even prepared to pay his salary for the remainder of the season he would have spent at Bayern.

However, in a breaking development on Friday morning, Goretzka made the decision to reject a transfer to Spain and stay put at Bayern. He’s now clear that he wants to stay with Vincent Kompany’s men until the end of the season and win more titles with the Bavarian champions. However, it’s now also clear that he will leave Die Roten in the summer when he becomes a free agent.

In my view, I think there’s a big wish to join the Premier League. I’m told Tottenham are one of the clubs interested in Leon Goretzka. So, I think this was also in the midfielder’s mind when he decided to avoid a January switch. In the summer, he’ll be free to join any club he’d like, and I think Tottenham is very much one of the clubs he’s interested in.

Has Serge Gnabry also caught the eye at Spurs?

It is TRUE: Tottenham are also interested in Serge GnabryThe forward is already in talks with Bayern Munich over signing a contract extension. Goretzka has no chance for a new contract in Munich, but Gnabry does. There’s a two-year offer on the table, and it seems that he’s prepared to stay put at the Allianz Arena. Serge Gnabry has basically turned around and said, “No, I’m talking with Bayern Munich at the moment. Thanks for the interest, but if it works with Bayern, I’m going to stay.” Tottenham have signalled that if things don’t work out for, they’re lying in wait.

Harry Kane begins contract talks with Bayern?

❌ It is NOT TRUE: Bayern have opened contract talks with Harry KaneI know that Max Eberl told reporters that there are always talks with Harry Kane – but I know for a fact that there are negotiations at the moment. So, both sides are optimistic that there will be a new contract, but there have yet to be official talks. Bayern want to keep the Englishman, and I think they will keep him, as Harry Kane is feeling very happy in Munich. But at the moment: negotiations have not started.

Lennart Karl to get a contract extension before the World Cup?

It is TRUE: Bayern want to offer Lennart Karl a contract extension before the World Cup. His current terms will automatically extend on his birthday (February 22) when he turns 18. He’ll get another year added to his contract, taking it to the summer of 2029 (at the moment it’s until 2028). Bayern Munich, however, want to give him a deal until 2031! They want to start negotiations, and they’ve already talked with the agent, Michael Ballack, but at the moment, it seems things won’t kick off until his birthday.

They’re really keen on making this deal before the World Cup, because they know at the competition – they hope, and I hope, he’ll get selected for Germany at the tournament – he’ll get really expensive. As we’ve seen against PSV, he’s got a really good relationship with Jamal Musiala. If he can take that to the national team, it’s only going to see his potential transfer value soar through the roof.

Yan Diomande attracting serious Premier League interest

It is TRUE: Premier League clubs, like Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal, have been sending scouts to attend the Red Bull Arena to watch Yan DiomandeBayern Munich are a little worried about this, as they don’t want to spend the kind of money that Premier League clubs can. They like Diomande. He’d be a player who would perfectly fit the kind of profile they’re looking for. But in the end, if they have to spend so much money – and they are talking about €100m [£86.6m] – that’s too much for Bayern Munich.

They’re not searching for a new number one on the left wing; they already have Luis Diaz. They just want to sign competition for the Colombia international, rather than someone playing frequently instead of him. With that in mind, I think this deal could be too complicated for Bayern.
