The big hints about Florent Ghisolfi's Sunderland transfer plans this summer and what to expect

Sunderland are working to strengthen this summer, with Florent Ghisolfi identifying targets and laying groundwork on deals. The plan is for fewer, higher calibre additions.

According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland are short at full back after Dennis Cirkin departed on a free and Lutsharel Geertruida’s loan ended at RB Leipzig. Trai Hume covers both sides, but one more is needed.

A permanent move for Geertruida remains of interest, though the expired option means a new, preferably lower, fee would be required. Interest in free agent Óscar Mingueza ended when he joined Crystal Palace, and the profile sought is a versatile right back who can step into midfield.

Omar Alderete was a bargain and pivotal last season, but extra cover at centre back is needed. Links include Jhon Lucumí, who has one year on his Bologna deal, Sassuolo's Bosnian international Tarik Muharemović and Parma's Mariano Troilo, both aged 23 and fitting the first-team ready brief with room to develop.

Sunderland want two natural wingers after Bertrand Traoré’s departure, despite Hume’s spells on the right. Matías Soulé, whom Ghisolfi initially took to AS Roma, is among the options, matching Le Bris’s demand for 1-v-1 quality and the ability to drift infield.

Soulé would command a significant fee, so Sunderland are investing major sums and must be patient. With Eliezer Mayenda sold to Stade Rennais, they may still seek cover up front, and if interest in Wilson Isidor advances, despite no indications so far, they would have to re-enter the market.
