Leon Goretzka was convinced about a move to Aston Villa after holding talks with Unai Emery, with the Spanish tactician’s conversation with the Germany star ‘the deciding factor’.

The midfielder has been a free agent since his contract at Bayern Munich ran out at the end of June and has been considering his options.

There has been interest in Goretzka from clubs in the MLS, but the midfielder has been keen to remain in Europe.

Now that opportunity has arisen, with Aston Villa switching their focus to Goretzka when Joao Palhinha agreed to a move to Benfica.

Goretzka, 31, has a full agreement with Aston Villa over heading to Villa Park and should be able to complete his move quickly.

According to German outlet FCBinside, Goretzka’s talk with Emery was ‘the deciding factor’ in convincing him to sign for Aston Villa.

How quickly Bayern Munich will be able to get him up to speed remains to be seen, as he has been a free agent throughout the summer.

Bayern Munich made the decision last season that they would not extend the midfielder’s deal and now he is set for a new chapter in the Premier League.

He has had interest from England over a period of several years and Manchester United tried to tempt him to leave Bayern Munich in 2021.

Liverpool wanted him when he was on the books at Schalke, but missed out and he joined Bayern Munich.

Despite the Reds being hugely keen, Goreztka denied having spoken to then Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp about a move.

Now, almost a decade on, Goretzka will have the chance to experience the Premier League with Aston Villa.

The experienced midfielder will hand Emery a further option in the engine room, which will be welcome for the Spaniard due to Amadou Onana’s injury.
