Jürgen Klopp will have to do without DFB captain Joshua Kimmich against Serbia. It’s now clear which Bayern star will lead the team.
In the third international match under Jürgen Klopp, an FC Bayern player will take on a special role. Serge Gnabry will lead the German national team onto the field as captain on Thursday evening against Serbia in Munich.
This is according to a report by BILD. The question of who would captain the team had remained open ahead of the match because Joshua Kimmich is not part of the squad this time. Klopp had merely given a clear hint during Wednesday’s press conference.
“Tomorrow, the team will be led onto the field by the player with the most international appearances,” explained the national team coach. Klopp did not want to reveal the name at that point.
Now the decision has been made: With 61 appearances for the German national team, Gnabry is the most experienced player on the current roster. The 30-year-old is also expected to start against Serbia.
According to information from BILD, Gnabry will take Lennart Karl’s place in the starting lineup. The Bayern veteran was already part of the squad for the first two matches under Klopp, but had to settle for a substitute role in both games against the Netherlands and Greece.
Gnabry is one of six players Klopp has kept in the squad following the first part of his unusual international break. The new national team coach had assembled an XXL squad for his first four matches within ten days and subsequently divided it into two groups.

Kimmich was only part of the initial squad and therefore left as planned. The 31-year-old, however, wasn’t particularly happy about it. After the match against Greece, the regular DFB captain had openly stated that he would have liked to stay with the team.
As a result, it is his Bayern teammate, of all people, who will now take over the captain’s armband. For Gnabry, the match also offers a chance to make a case for inclusion in Klopp’s significantly smaller 23-man squad in November.
Following a draw against the Netherlands and the subsequent loss to Greece, Klopp is still waiting for his first win as Germany’s head coach. Against Serbia, Captain Gnabry is now expected to help secure that victory.
