Fernandez was named in the starting line-up having served a two game ban for comments he made about his future during the international break.

The Argentine was powerless to stop Chelsea from losing 1-0, which was their fourth league loss in a row without scoring.

Liam Rosenior on why Enzo Fernandez wasn’t captain

Fernandez lined up alongside Moises Caicedo, who captained the side in midfield, with Cole Palmer occupying the number ten role, but once again the Blues were unable to score.

The 25-Year-old had a good chance in the first half, which he arguably should have scored, whilst Liam Delap and Wesley Fofana hit the woodwork in the second period.

Rosenior is hopeful Fernandez will be fit for Tuesday’s game against Brighton, and he explained afterwards why the World Cup winner didn’t captain the team against United.

“The decision is we have a leadership group,” he told his post-match press conference.

“I feel like wearing the armband is an honour for this club. Enzo played like a captain today. I thought he was magnificent.

“He ran himself into the ground, he gave everything, he played forward, he was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions. I think that shows actually where he’s been with us all this while.

“I’m very, very happy with his performance. I’m very, very happy with him. Even though tonight we didn’t get the result that I felt we deserved or needed.”

Chelsea’s only win in their last seven games was against Port Vale, and the Blues are level on points with Brentford and Bournemouth.

Rosenior was booed by Chelsea fans as he went to applaud them, and it’s very difficult to see how he turns the tide.
