Last summer, Santi Cazorla returned home to boyhood heroes Real Oviedo, with the intention of helping them into La Liga. They fell agonising short last weekend, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Espanyol in the promotion play-off final, much to the horror of the 39-year-old and his teammates. However, that was lit a spark within Cazorla, who is determined to stay until his mission is over.
On Thursday, Oviedo announced that Cazorla has signed a new one-year extension to the contract he signed last summer, in which he is paid a very low salary.
Cazorla made 26 appearances across all competitions for Real Oviedo last season, and he will hope to play his part again in 2024-25, as the Asturians look to secure their long-awaited promotion to La Liga. Currently, the search for a new manager is ongoing, following Luis Carrion’s decision to step down earlier this week in order to join Las Palmas.
