If you’re looking for logic in football, stay far away from the Polish Championship (Ekstraklasa) this season.

The current standings reveal what must be the most balanced (and statistically bizarre) league in the world right now. The Brasileirão doesn’t even come close. (See the full table at the end of the post)

The scenario is an “upside-down world.” To begin with, the competitiveness is extreme: only 11 points separate the league leader (Wisła Płock, with 30 points) from the absolute bottom (Termalica, with 19). Basically, three or four rounds could turn the table completely upside down.

The curiosities continue when we look at the top. Wisła Płock leads the competition in an unusual way: the team drew its last five matches. Incredibly, this string of stumbles was enough to lift the team from 3rd to 1st place, taking advantage of their rivals’ slip-ups.

Other facts that defy traditional football logic, highlighted by the profile @TrollFootball:

- Does attack win games? The league leader has a timid attack. In fact, 13 teams have scored more goals than the leader itself (who has 21 goals in 18 matches).

- The 13th place paradox: Lechia Gdańsk, who sits only in 13th place, has the same number of wins (7) as the leader. More than that: Lechia boasts the best attack in the competition (37 goals), but is fighting at the bottom of the table.

- The giant’s crisis: Legia Warsaw, the biggest and most traditional club in Poland, languishes in second-to-last place, with the same 19 points as the bottom team. The tragic and curious detail? The giant team has the fourth-best defense in the league, proving that having a solid backline hasn’t been enough to save them from disaster.
