Sunderland start their Premier League season at Ipswich Town’s Portman Road this week, and Régis Le Bris might face a major call on the right.

Sunderland Echo notes that Thomas Meunier has not been ruled out as a back issue is assessed, yet he is a major doubt after only 45 pre-season minutes. Nordi Mukiele is on track to feature, though Le Bris has hinted he might not be ready to start.

That could push Trai Hume to right back and leave a vacancy ahead. On the left, Chemsdine Talbi started against Stade Rennais, a sensible pick given the 21-year-old’s experience.

If Hume drops back, the right-wing choice appears to be Chris Rigg or Nilson Angulo. Rigg has shone this summer, supplying Hume’s opener against RC Lens and the move that led to Wilson Isidor’s goal, then creating a headed chance for Reinildo that Brice Samba saved.

On merit, it is hard to argue Rigg does not deserve to start. Yet his recent impact off the bench could count against him if Le Bris wants that weapon at Ipswich.

Angulo is still raw and was caught offside too often against Rennais, but he worked tirelessly and repeatedly won the ball high up.

After the Rennais friendly, Le Bris said the decision remained up in the air and he would watch training before choosing. It would be harsh were Rigg to miss out, but he looks ready to make his mark either way.
