It’s Chelsea – Brentford this evening, but off the pitch there are even bigger things happening.

This week, just 10 days or so after whispers began, Clearlake Capital bought out the stakes of Todd Boehly and Mark Walter in Chelsea. That means the American investment group now control the whole club in terms of governance, if not equity.

Walter was never a public figure with the Blues – he had enough going on elsewhere. But Boehly was the face of the takeover, and we all knew his name long before we knew about Behdad Eghbali, Jose Feliciano or anyone else.

The Athletic have done a fun run-down of the chaotic Boehly-era. While he faded into the background in the last two years, there were some standout moments.

There’s a retelling of how close Chelsea were to signing Cristiano Ronaldo in 2022 after a meeting with Jorge Mendes:

“Multiple sources told The Athletic that Boehly came away from that encounter highly intrigued by the possibility of signing Mendes’ star client Cristiano Ronaldo, who was then dissatisfied in his second spell at Manchester United, but Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea’s head coach at the time, made clear on several occasions his strong opposition to any deal for the Portuguese forward.”
