Sunderland visit Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday for the Tyne-Wear derby, with both Régis Le Bris and Eddie Howe managing significant injury issues. Sunderland’s list is longer, though the hosts also have key absences.

The hosts also suffered a setback in Wednesday night’s Champions League defeat to Barcelona. According to Sunderland Echo, updates are due at Friday pre-match press conferences, but early indications outline absences and doubts in both camps.

Bruno Guimaraes is out, sidelined since February with a hamstring problem, and will miss the derby. He is expected to return after the subsequent international break.

Lewis Miley remains out after a dead leg followed by muscle damage in late January. He is close to returning, but like Bruno, is expected to miss this match and come back after the international break.

Sandro Tonali is a major doubt after being forced off early in the second half against Barcelona with a hip or groin issue.

Reinildo is available. The left back has built fitness over the past fortnight and, having resumed full training at the weekend, is expected to be back for this one. His availability would be a significant boost to Sunderland after his display in the reverse fixture.
