The one curse that keeps haunting Barcelona week after week

Barcelona’s 1-2 loss against Girona was not only marked by refereeing controversy but also by a frustrating trend that has followed the team throughout the season.

Once again, the woodwork proved to be Barcelona’s biggest enemy, denying them goals at crucial moments.

The most painful moment came when Lamine Yamal stepped up to take a penalty.

The young winger had the chance to level the score, but his effort struck the post and bounced away, leaving Barcelona stunned.

What made the situation even more frustrating was the fact that just two minutes earlier, Raphinha had also seen his attempt crash against the woodwork.

A look at the worrying numbers

These two moments were not isolated incidents. In fact, they were part of a much bigger pattern that has haunted Barcelona throughout the 2025/26 campaign.

With the two strikes against Girona, the Catalan giants have now hit the post or crossbar 32 times this season and a staggering 25 of those have come in La Liga alone.

In the Champions League, Barcelona have struck the woodwork five times, although, fortunately, it did not cost them qualification for the round of 16.

However, in the Copa del Rey, the story has been less forgiving. In the semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid, the woodwork again played a cruel role.

With Atletico leading 2-0, Fermin Lopez thought he had pulled one back, only to see his effort hit the post in the 20th minute.

Across Europe’s top five leagues, no team has suffered more from this frustrating statistic than Barcelona

Flick’s side lead the unwanted table with 32 woodwork strikes, while Bayern Munich sit behind them with 27.

In La Liga, Barcelona are averaging one woodwork strike per match, with 25 in 24 games, a figure that has clearly cost them valuable points.

To put things in perspective, Ferran Torres leads the list with six, followed by Lamine Yamal with five.

Dani Olmo, Raphinha and Marcus Rashford have each hit the woodwork four times, while Fermin Lopez has done so three times.

Robert Lewandowski and Eric Garcia have two each, with Jules Kounde and Marc Casado adding one apiece.
