Relieved to have secured three points against Angers (0-2) before joining the Nati during the international break, the Swiss striker expressed his feelings to the media at the final whistle.
They will leave with a sense of accomplishment. Driven by the desire to return to their respective national teams with their first away win in 2025, the AS Monaco players did just that against Le SCO (0-2). It was a result which inevitably delighted Breel Embolo, who spoke in the mixed zone ahead of going away on international duty. 🎙️
Good evening, Breel. Does this hard-to-predict victory feel good?
I can understand that we always expect a football match to be a spectacle, but Angers played pretty well in the first half, just as they did in Monaco in the reverse fixture. We defended well, even if we didn’t have many chances. But we’re confident in our identity!
And it's been a long time since we've won away from home, and it's not always easy to turn things around, so we can be satisfied because we did it as a team!
Breel EmboloOn the satisfaction in winning away from home
I still want to congratulate this team, who showed at the Stade Louis-II that they deserved their victory by showing some good football. For our part, we knew it was going to be difficult tonight, but if we scored towards the end, it would be a win for us. Once again, congratulations to Angers, but we absolutely wanted this victory today!
It was a great performance for AS Monaco this weekend!
We’ll see after today’s match, but we really wanted to stay focused on ourselves. We knew there was a great chance to move up the table, and we did it by winning here. Now we’ll all go to the national team with a smile on our faces, because it’s also important to show that we’re heading in the direction we want.
And it’s been a long time since we’ve won away from home, and it’s not always easy to turn things around, so we can be satisfied because we did it as a team! The most important thing now is to come back from the break healthy, because we have eight games left and our destiny is in our own hands.
Mika Biereth is going to finish as the top scorer in Ligue 1 at this rate (smiles)…
I hope so, for him and for us! There are still a few players ahead of him (smiles), but we’ll do everything we can to help him, to help him score as much as possible, because when that happens we often win. Today he scored a great goal on a fantastic pass from Caio (Henrique). Once again, it was a mature display today, after a tough first half where the expected spectacle wasn’t there, but the main thing was there.
Have you analyzed what you haven’t been able to do lately?
We’ve indeed had several opportunities to get back on the podium without succeeding before tonight’s match. But Ligue 1 is a very good league where any team can beat anyone, so it’s important to focus on your team, because surprising results can happen from anywhere.
. We know that in the reverse fixture against Nice, we lost due to going a man down. But at home, it's a special match, and we have to react well. Until then, we'll be off to international duty, and the most important thing is for everyone to enjoy themselves and return healthy and full of positivity for the final sprint, because it's going to be a real heatwave!
Breel EmboloOn the Derby
In Toulouse we could have done something by winning, even if we took one point in the end. It was the same last time in Lille! Now we don’t want to lose anymore and start a good run, because we’re reaching crunch time, so today we’re taking a good step forward.
Was it even more important to go ahead of Nice before the Derby?
Today, it was important to focus on Angers. We know that in the reverse fixture against Nice, we lost due to going a man down. But at home, it’s a special match, and we have to react well. Until then, we’ll be off to international duty, and the most important thing is for everyone to enjoy themselves and return healthy and full of positivity for the final sprint, because it’s going to be a real heatwave!
How do you see the Champions League race?
We’ve always said we wanted to return to Europe next season. When you see what Paris Saint-Germain is capable of, it’s a bit difficult to reach first place (smiles), so there are still two spots left to qualify directly for the Champions League, one play-off spot, and one for the Europa League. But our goal is obviously to qualify for the Champions League again, because we had a lot of fun during this 2024-2025 campaign, showing what we were capable of.
To enjoy these evenings again, we have to go for the podium, so we’ll give it our all in these last eight matches against very good teams at home. Today, we certainly took a big step forward compared to our recent difficulties away from home, by bringing back these three points. So it’s a very important victory as a team!
I've been at AS Monaco with him for three years, and I can tell you that when he's at his best and mentally free, he's one of the best in Europe in his position. It's up to us as a squad to put him in the best possible conditions.
A final word on Caio Henrique’s return to form…
Caio is a great player, experienced and very important for the locker room! We need everyone at the end of the season. Even Wilfried (Singo), who was returning after a few weeks, had a great game, and that’s what we want, because we need a strong team in this final sprint.
But to come back to Caio, I’ve been at AS Monaco with him for three years, and I can tell you that when he’s at his best and mentally free, he’s one of the best in Europe in his position. It’s up to us as a squad to put him in the best possible conditions.
