With group stage and knockout matches scheduled in multiple regions, the competition footprint will span from the East Coast to the West Coast.

Which venues have been chosen for the 2028 LA Olympics?

LA28 confirmed that matches will take place in New York, Columbus, Nashville, St Louis, San Jose and San Diego.

All six venues are home to Major League Soccer teams and vary in size and setting.

PayPal Park in San Jose is also home to Bay FC, who recently signed England players Anouk Denton from West Ham and Keira Barry from Manchester United.

The Snapdragon Stadium in San Francisco is also home to the San Diego Wave.

In New York, games will be played at New York Stadium, also known as Etihad Park, which is currently under construction in Queens and is due to be completed in 2027 as the future home of New York City FC.

Below is the list of stadiums;

  1. Energizer Park – Home of St. Louis City
  2. Etihad Park- Future home of New York City FC
  3. Geodis Park – Home of Nasville SC
  4. PayPal Park – Home of Bay FC and the San Jose Earthquakes
  5. Rose Bowl – Based in Pasadena, California
  6. ScottsMiracle-Gro Field – Home of the Columbus Crew
  7. Snapdragon Stadium – Home of San Diego Wave and San Diego FC

Among the selected venues, Snapdragon Stadium is the largest with a capacity of 35,000, while PayPal Park is the smallest at 18,000.

Rose Bowl confirmed for medal matches

While matches will be spread nationwide, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, remains central to the tournament.

Final stage matches, including the men’s and women’s gold medal games, have already been confirmed for the iconic venue.

Organisers said the men’s final is scheduled for July 28th, 2028, followed by the women’s final on July 29th, 2028.

Shana Ferguson, LA28 chief of sport and games delivery officer, emphasised the broader impact of the decision.

“Bringing Olympic football group stage and knockout matches to stadiums across the United States means more fans will witness this global event and experience the Olympic spirit firsthand,” she said.

Changes to the tournament format

The 2028 Olympics will mark a milestone for the sport. For the first time, more women’s teams than men’s teams will compete in Olympic soccer. Sixteen women’s teams will take part, compared to 12 on the men’s side.

LA28 said it aims to set a benchmark for the first Olympics in which all team sports will feature at least as many women’s teams as men’s.

On the qualification front, only the United States has secured a place in the men’s tournament so far as the host nation. The United States has also qualified for the women’s competition, along with Brazil and Colombia.

Meanwhile, Ireland have submitted a preliminary bid to host the 2029 Women’s Champions League final, with plans put forward earlier this week.
