On 24 February, the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) earned yet another trophy after winning the 2021 SheBelieves Cup, becoming the first team in history to win back-to-back titles.

Adding silverware to their trophy cabinet is a constant encounter for the top-ranked team in women’s football. They seemingly win everything with ease and it’s simply mesmerising.

The SheBelieves Cup brought the potential for the United States to relinquish their title to Brazil, but the word “lose” doesn’t seem to feature in their vocabulary.

With Brazil leading the table heading into the final round of matches, the title, and history, were on the line. The hosts needed either a draw or a win in their last match to come out on top and 0-0 would have been enough.

But the United States did what they do best against Argentina. They played strategic, confident and determined football to run out 6-0 winner. Was there any doubt they wouldn’t pull it off? Not really.

After keeping a perfect record in the tournament with three clean sheets, the current FIFA Women’s World Cup holders extended their unbeaten streak to a staggering 37 matches. In that time, they’ve outscored their opponents 188-27.

With such consistent results accomplished by some of the biggest names in women’s football, you can’t help but marvel at this team. They can captivate any football fan.

Stars like Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, Julie Ertz, Alex Morgan, Crystal Dunn, Christen Press and the like play some of the highest quality football there is. Rising talents like Rose Lavelle and Catarina Macario also show the future of the team is in good hands.

Even after the departure of manager Jill Ellis, the team clicks just as easily under Vlatko Andonovski. Sixteen matches into his managing career he is 16-0, extending the record for best start for a manager in the team’s history.

Regardless of the competition or venue, opponents are left in their wake. Even close games, like their slim 1-0 victory over Canada last week, the USWNT always find a way to win.

The sheer strength and dominance of this team continues to prove itself an enigma in the women’s game. What will it take for a team this dominant to eventually be challenged?

One can only hope the rest of the women’s football world is able to match their standards in the future.
