Erling Haaland might well be on his way to becoming the greatest Champions League goal scorer of all time.
The Manchester City striker found the net yet again on Thursday, heading home from Phil Foden’s cheeky lob to help his side beat Napoli 2-0 at home.
That was his 50th goal in just his 49th Champions League appearance, making him the fastest player to reach the milestone in the competition’s history.
The Norwegian is currently outpacing some of the greatest forwards ever to grace the game, such as Thierry Henry, Raul, Ruud van Nistelrooy and, of course, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The records just keep on tumbling for Haaland, but there is one that he just missed out on. At 25 years and 59 days of age, he is the second youngest player to ever score 50 goals in the Champions League. The only footballer to do it at an earlier stage of his career was, obviously, Messi, who was 24 years and 284 days old when he reached the half century.
It is not usual for even the best players to reach 50 goals in the Champions League in their mid-twenties, with Kylian Mbappe the only other player to do so. Even Ronaldo took until he was 28 to do so.
