With Portuguese coach Luís Castro in place, Grêmio have set their early-season plan for 2026. In a World Cup year with an advanced CBF calendar, they open the Campeonato Gaúcho on 11 January and are expected to lean on academy players in the first rounds while the senior group prepares for the Brasileirão start on the 28th.
According to GZH, left-back Pedro Gabriel and midfielder João Borne should begin 2026 among the senior group for the state championship, so they will not play the Copinha.
The group starting the season already includes three players from November’s U17 World Cup in Qatar. Attacking midfielder Gabriel Mec, midfielder Tiago and centre-back Luis Eduardo will be available for early fixtures against Avenida, São José, São Luiz, Guarany and Inter.
Riquelme, 19, who featured under Mano Menezes in the second half and is recovering from injury, is also confirmed for this new phase. Centre-forward Jardiel, used in the final matches of the season, remains in contention.
Brazil U17 first-choice goalkeeper Gabriel Menegon, 17, could also receive opportunities with the senior squad despite his current recovery. He suffered a muscular problem late in the year and missed the age-group World Cup.
