New West Ham United head coach Rita Guarino says that she sees the quality in the team and that she is confident that results will come in the second half of the season.

The Hammers have won just one of their first 11 games in the Barclays Women’s Super League this season. The club opted to bring in Guarino as a replacement for former boss Rehanne Skinner during the winter break.

Speaking to the media for the first time, Guarino said that she saw positives in the team’s performances before Christmas and that this makes her confident of getting results.

“I have analysed the results and the team’s performances,” Guarino said when speaking in a West Ham United press conference. “In certain games, I have seen high performance levels, so I think it’s just about the results.

“In certain games, they’ve deserved more, better results than what they’ve gained. They have good quality, not-so-much consistently during the season in terms of performance, but I think they have the quality. That was what convinced me that the team can get results.”

Going on to discuss playing style, Guarino said that the focus isn’t so much on her principles, it’s more about what the players can do.

She said “I don’t really think about my style of play, I focus on the style that my team can show on the pitch based on their characteristics, skills and potential.

“I’m very focused on the style that we can show with the players that are available.”

Guarino faces a tough start to life at West Ham United with a trip to Chelsea up first on Sunday. She wants to see the players put what they’ve learned on the training pitch into practice at Kingsmeadow.

She said “It’s about performance. We’ve had little time together, so we can’t coach everything but we’ve worked on principles.

“In this game, I want to see how the players implement what we’ve worked on in training this week.”

West Ham United’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea kicks-off at 12pm on Sunday afternoon.
