FC Bayern Munich ’s frustration ran deep after the draw with the promoted team. After the 2-2 draw at the Volksparkstadion, the focus quickly shifted not only to the result but also to the way the referee handled the game. Now an HSV player has spoken out and lashed out at several Bayern stars.

Despite being favourites, the record champions were unable to secure a draw at Hamburger SV. One penalty decision in particular caused a lot of discussion: After a tackle between Joshua Kimmich and Nicolai Remberg, referee Harm Osmers pointed to the spot and Fabio Vieira converted to make it 1-0 to HSV. The decision was perceived as harsh by the Munich players, who remained angry until after the final whistle.

Sporting director Max Eberl also spoke out clearly afterwards: „You had to fight against extreme adversity: a stadium that was completely behind this team and a referee who seemed out of his depth in some situations and did not judge many things well,“ explained the Bayern boss. At the same time, he emphasized that this was no excuse for the points lost.

Remberg: „They really discussed a lot with the referee“

Remberg himself assessed the penalty scene soberly: „It wasn’t a bad foul, but I have to accept the contact. I spoke to Kimmich afterwards and he also said that it was a foul. He took it in his stride.“ However, the midfielder showed much less understanding for the actions of other Munich players.

„They really argued a lot with the referee,“ said the 25-year-old about the Bayern players. „They ran up in every situation and just complained, we would have all got a yellow. That was a bit harsh.“ He „didn’t see much“ of the much-discussed captain’s rule.

This picture is also supported by scenes after the end of the game. There were intense discussions between Bayern representatives and the referee in the catacombs, including a sentence from Harry Kane, who shook his head as he walked past the situation and audibly said: „The worst I’ve ever met in soccer.“

HSV coach Merlin Polzin, on the other hand, struck a more conciliatory tone. „It’s completely normal for FC Bayern to want to do something different against a newly promoted team than draw the game with time running out,“ he explained. They had tried to defend the result „within the scope of our possibilities and in a fair way“. As for Remberg’s statements, Polzin merely said: „I don’t know exactly what Rambo meant.“
