Chelsea made a swift move for Emiliano Martinez to strengthen the goalkeeper position.

Emiliano Martinez was full of praise for Chelsea’s front three after another strong attacking display in the team’s thrilling 4-3 win over Brighton on Sunday.

Martinez, whose transfer to Chelsea from Aston Villa was announced earlier on Sunday morning, made his debut appearance for the club a few hours later in the Premier League clash with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso chose to start the experienced goalkeeper over Robert Sanchez, who was under scrutiny after his questionable performance against Fulham last week, and Mike Penders, who was on the bench.

It was not the ideal full debut for Martinez, who still conceded three goals in front of the Stamford Bridge crowd, but he still played a crucial role in the win, with four important saves.

The attack, however, was once again the primary reason Chelsea secured their third consecutive win, and Martinez argued that with the three players they have up front, this team just “hurt” the opposition.

“I came here to help. I had an amazing seven years at Villa to challenge myself and to try to win the Premier League,” the Argentina international told Sky Sports in his post-match interview.

“I came here for a reason. I knew the front three is amazing. They’re different. You can see today, when we go forward, we hurt teams.

“I think Joao had another chance to put (the game) to bed. We had a lot of chances. I think Cole (Palmer) had another one to tap into the goal.

“That’s what we need to keep improving, keep scoring goals, and at the back, just bring (the number of) goals down.”

After scoring a goal apiece and providing two assists in the 3-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24, Joao Pedro, Palmer, and Morgan Rogers combined for two goals and two assists against Brighton.

Rogers provided the assist for Pedro Neto’s goal after making a brilliant run to make it 2-0 to Chelsea, before Joao Pedro tripled their lead from a Jorrel Hato assist.

The Brazil international then made the simple pass that led to Chelsea’s fourth goal of the game through Palmer’s brilliant left-footed strike from outside the box.

It was a chaotic game in which Chelsea kept only 26 per cent possession, their lowest in over two decades, and allowed Brighton to create almost as many big chances (five) as they did (six).

Undeniably, there is clearly room for improvement defensively for Alonso’s side.

On the bright side, scoring four goals despite the low possession rate shows that this Chelsea team are just as dangerous on the counter-attack as when pinning the opposition defence back.

With the arrival of Martinez, who has years of experience at the highest level both at club and international levels, Chelsea can hopefully cut down their mistakes at the back and concede fewer goals going forward.

Once they do, it is safe to say that this Chelsea side should be confident that they can outscore any team in the league thanks to the attacking talent they have at their disposal.
