There is no doubt that one of the biggest transfers of the summer was Barcelona signing Rodri from Manchester City. The Catalans had not planned to bring in a new midfielder, but when it became clear that the 30-year-old would be available, they moved quickly to secure his services in a deal that was worth approximately €65m.
Rodri’s arrival has been celebrated by many a person associated with Barcelona. The 2026 World Cup Golden Ball winner is seen as the perfect addition to Hansi Flick’s midfield to partner Pedri, but this view has been echoed by former player Thierry Henry, who discussed him during a segment on CBS Sports Golazo (via Sport).
“I never thought I would see another Busquets… And here I am seeing one! I don’t know if he is better than Busquets or not, because that would lead us to another debate. But, again, Barça have another Busquets. Busquets never won the Ballon d’Or, but he also played with Xavi and Iniesta, who didn’t win it either. Rodri makes the team completely different just with his presence.
“His way of playing, his vision of the game and his ability to anticipate danger and stop the opponent are masterful skills. It’s really different and we know that, and we hope he maintains his physical condition for them.”
Barcelona have started the season with a bang, recording four successive victories in La Liga by an aggregate scoreline of 17-2. They are emerging as early contenders for another fantastic campaign under Flick’s tutelage, and Henry is backing his former club to make waves – especially now that they have Rodri as their player.
