Alphonso Davies is back in training at FC Bayern – and is immediately causing a stir at Säbener Strasse. Vincent Kompany was visibly impressed by the Canadian’s physical condition on Friday and hinted that his return to the pitch is imminent.
Munich are preparing for their home match against SC Freiburg and want to get back on the winning track after the 2:2 draw at Union Berlin. But Kompany is once again facing challenges in terms of personnel. Captain Manuel Neuer has a cold and is in danger of missing out, while Serge Gnabry has returned from the national team with an injury and will definitely be absent.
This makes the return of Hiroki Ito all the more pleasing. The Japanese player has overcome his third metatarsal fracture in two years and is back in the squad for the first time in eight months. His return brings important defensive variability that Kompany has sorely missed recently.

Even more significant for Munich than Ito’s return, however, is the progress made by Alphonso Davies. The left-back played his last competitive match for Bayern in March before a cruciate ligament rupture brought his season to an abrupt halt. He was now partially integrated into team training for the first time at the start of the week – a milestone that has brought palpable relief to FCB.
At the matchday press conference, Kompany left no doubt as to how extraordinary his protégé’s development is. „Alphonso is an incredible athlete. Even though he’s back and not yet at 100%, he’s probably the fastest in the squad,“ said the coach, visibly impressed.
The Belgian also reported impressive moments in training: „It looks like he can’t get tired at all. That’s not normal when you come back after such a long injury.“ Words that show how important Davies is to Munich’s game – and how much Kompany relies on him.
Despite all the euphoria, Kompany also tempered expectations, saying that the Canadian should „still have a little patience“, as playing too soon after a cruciate ligament rupture would be risky. Bayern don’t want to rush things and want to bring Davies back in a stable condition in the long term.
Nevertheless, Kompany gave the fans hope: „If he can still be involved in one or two games this year, it will be a huge success for us.“ The sentence shows how close Davies is to his return.
