This week in Lazio history centres on the 2009 Supercoppa triumph in Beijing, a set of summer friendlies, and the remembrance of Orlando Rozzoni.
According to The Laziali, the round-up spans Hamburg, Derby, Amsterdam, Malaga and Gelsenkirchen. Lazio beat Hamburger SV and Derby County, drew 3-3 with Barcelona at the Amsterdam Tournament, won at Malaga, then defeated Schalke 04.
On 8 August 2009 at Beijing National Stadium, Lazio faced Inter in the Supercoppa. New coach Davide Ballardini was without Goran Pandev, Cristian Ledesma and Lorenzo De Silvestri after contract stand-offs with president Claudio Lotito.
After a balanced first half, the breakthrough came in the 62nd minute. Aleksandar Kolarov’s central free-kick deflected to Francelino Matuzalem, his volley was parried by Julio Cesar and bounced off him into the net. Four minutes later Stefano Mauri sent Tommaso Rocchi through to chest and lob over Julio Cesar before Cristian Chivu or Lucio could intervene.
Inter rallied and Samuel Eto’o pulled one back, but Lazio held firm to win 2-1 and lift their third Supercoppa.
Orlando Rozzoni, a powerful centre forward nicknamed Orlando Furioso, joined in 1959 and became a fan favourite. He made 100 appearances and scored 41 goals across Serie A, Serie B and the Coppa Italia, and helped promotion after a year at Udinese. He died on 7 August 2009.
Birthdays this week include Loro Borici, Simone Del Nero, Pierpaolo Manservisi, Claudio Bandoni, Enrico Burlando, Daichi Kamada, Danilo Cataldi, Franco Chimenti, Roberto Tavola and Alessandro Murgia.
