This week recalls a key 1974 step towards Lazio’s first scudetto, a stirring 1993 draw with Milan, strong European nights and the memory of Aldo Puccinelli. According to The Laziali, these dates also take in derby success.
On 10 March 1974, despite absences, Lazio beat Cesena 2-0 at the Olimpico, Chinaglia and Nanni scoring before half-time. On 11 March 1973, they won the derby 2-0, Garlaschelli on target before an own goal.
On 13 March 2003, Simone Inzaghi’s second-half strike earned a 1-0 UEFA Cup win over Beşiktaş, leaving the semi-final charge in the balance. On 14 March 2013, Libor Kozak’s hat-trick sank Stuttgart 3-0 to reach the Europa League quarter-finals. On 14 March 2001, a rotated side drew 3-3 at Leeds, Mihajlovic twice and Ravanelli scoring.
Match in Focus, 14 March 1993, Lazio 2-2 Milan. Signori threatened early, then Papin blasted in from 30 metres on 10 minutes. A Boban pass deflected off Winter to wrong-foot Orsi for 2-0, before Gascoigne replied from Bacci’s cross.
After the break Lazio poured forward. Gascoigne slalomed but shot weakly, Rossi denied Signori on 79, and on 86 Stroppa crossed for Bergodi’s headed equaliser. Lazio pushed for more yet settled for a point.
Aldo Puccinelli, second for Lazio league appearances behind Stefan Radu, played 350 games and scored 78 goals. Born in Bientina on 25 December 1920, he joined in 1940, returned after wartime spells with Massese and Santacroce, and stayed a further 10 seasons. He figured in three straight fourth-place finishes, captained at times, later moved to Livorno, coached across Tuscany and died on 11 March 1994.
