Thomas Bramall, who oversaw Leeds United’s contentious 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, will be fourth official for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Arsenal, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk.

At Selhurst Park he dismissed Gabriel Gudmundsson for two bookings, the second seen as very soft. After Gudmundsson collided with Ismaila Sarr on halfway he was swiftly shown another yellow, with Palace players and fourth official Paul Tierney reminding Bramall the defender had already been booked.

Later he opted against a second yellow for Palace wing-back Brennan Johnson after he tripped James Justin to halt a counter, his fourth foul of the game.

Bramall did award Leeds a penalty for Will Hughes’ handball, and his assistant correctly ruled out a Jefferson Lerma finish for offside.

The calls have dominated the week’s debate. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher argued the red card was correct and that Johnson should not have been dismissed, while others disagreed and Daniel Farke pointed to inconsistency.

Farke maintained the second booking was unwarranted, saying the duel had little pace and was not tactical, and that the referee seemed to forget the earlier caution. He contrasted it with Johnson’s foul while booked, said he was not asking for a red, and felt the dismissal altered the match, though he was glad to leave with a point.

For Sunday Bramall joins referee Peter Bankes, assistants Neil Davies and Steve Meredith and VAR John Brooks. As standard, they have no domestic league appointments this weekend.
