Thomas Meunier is closing in on a two-year move to Sunderland, with a formal announcement expected on Wednesday, according to Sky Sports. Fabrizio Romano reports the Belgium international has completed his medical and agreed terms.
Meunier is a free agent after leaving Lille. The 34-year-old would add significant European and international experience and compete with Trai Hume at right-back. His arrival could allow Nordi Mukiele to feature more often in central defence as the club return to continental competition.
TEAMtalk reports that Everton have stepped up talks for Genoa defender Brooke Norton-Cuffy, though Sunderland are monitoring his situation. The 22-year-old, capable at right-back or wing-back, is understood to be valued at around £17million.
FourFourTwo says Sunderland are close to adding a French attacking midfielder and has identified Noé Lebreton of NEC Nijmegen. The 22-year-old posted seven goals and six assists in 27 Eredivisie matches last season as NEC finished third.
Sunderland have been exploring several defensive options and see Meunier as a low-cost, experienced addition. Fulham have also been credited with interest in Norton-Cuffy, while Everton are currently described as the most active club. The Black Cats continue to assess targets ahead of the new campaign.
