Goncalo Ramos scored the winner in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway in the Nations League on Sunday.
The AC Milan record-signing has now scored in his past three games for Portugal— his longest scoring streak since making his debut in 2022.
Ramos has taken advantage of Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence following his fallout with coach Jorge Jesus, cementing his place in the starting line-up.
Ramos came off the bench against Wales before replacing Ronaldo in the starting team against Norway.
He has repaid Jesus’ trust since then, showing that he can lead Portugal’s attack in Ronaldo’s absence.
Ramos scored the winner against Norway, before contributing a goal and an assist in the victory over Denmark.
Ramos is unlikely to be as prolific as the Al Nassr striker, but he offers more mobility and pressing and movement inside the penalty box.
The 25-year-old has also developed a great understanding with Jesus.
Just before his goal against Norway, the 72-year-old had instructed Ramos to move into the penalty box. Moments later, he tapped home from Joao Felix’s clever pass.
Jesus has not closed the door on Ronaldo’s return, but may have found a potential replacement for the former Manchester United forward in Ramos.
He has won all four of his opening games in charge of the Selecao, guiding them to the top of Group D, six points clear of Denmark.
Portugal will seal their spot as group winners if they beat Denmark in November.
