Charlton have already shocked West Ham this season

Tottenham take on Charlton tonight in the Carabao Cup second round as they look to bounce back from their humbling 3-0 defeat to Brentford.

Spurs were dismantled by Keith Andrews’ side on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, leaving Roberto De Zerbi to claim his side were not yet a team.

After an aggressive summer of spending, Spurs fell flat against Brentford, with debutants Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, Sandro Tonali and Andy Robertson all struggling to make an impact.

One of the few positives from that game came in the form of £85million man Mateus Fernandes’ cameo off the bench.

The Portuguese midfielder helped establish some semblance of control in the second-half, and De Zerbi will be hoping to build on that small crumb of comfort for the visit of Championship Charlton.

Spurs will head into the game as favourites, but they must also be wary of Nathan Jones’ side, who have made an impressive start to the new campaign.

Charlton have won all of their first three games in all competitions this season and stunned Championship promotion hopefuls West Ham at the London Stadium last weekend.

The Addicks will be no walkovers and will fancy their chances of causing an upset at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

So, Standard Sport identified three Charlton players Spurs need to look out for on Wednesday evening…

Tyreece Campbell

Fresh from signing a new long-term contract, Tyreece Campbell has made a blistering start to the new season, scoring three goals in three games for the south-east London club.

The 22-year-old was due to be out of contract next summer but has committed his future to Charlton, having come through the club’s academy to make 173 first-team appearances.

A fast, direct and dynamic forward, Campbell’s pace in transition and dribbling ability could cause Spurs problems.

Hailed as a “special talent” by Jones, the Charlton boss believes he is finally starting to see the best of Campbell, who has begun to add goals to his game.

Charlton did well to hold on to Campbell and turned down interest from elsewhere to keep him at the club.

The Jamaican international will view tonight as an opportunity to showcase his talent and build on his impressive form in front of goal.

Lloyd Jones

Another key player Charlton have managed to tie down is centre-back and vice-captain Lloyd Jones, who signed a two-year contract extension earlier this month.

The 30-year-old played a part in all 46 Championship games last season and has been integral to Charlton’s excellent start to the new campaign.

A no-nonsense defender, he will relish protecting his own box and can also contribute in the final third.

Jones has scored in each of Charlton’s opening two Championship games, including a miraculous overhead kick against West Ham.

Spurs were pedestrian going forward in losing to Brentford, but if they get Jones running back towards his own penalty area, then they could find some success.

Try to match him up physically, though, by sending aimless crosses into the box, and he will gleefully mop up possession.

Sonny Carey

Charlton do not score many goals, but when they do, midfielder Sonny Carey tends to be at the heart of it.

Whether creating or scoring, Carey is the centrepiece of Charlton’s midfield, helping to bridge the gap between defence and attack.

The 25-year-old netted eight league goals last season and has started the new campaign in a similar vein.

Charlton’s frontline blends the pace of Campbell with the physicality of striker Myles Leaburn, and Carey is the creative hub that knits it all together.

Charlton’s attack can be unpredictable and inconsistent, but with Carey in the side, Jones has a player he can look to bring some calm and composure in the final third.

One of Charlton’s best routes to goal against Spurs will be in transition, and it will be left to Carey to progress the ball and unleash Campbell’s pace on the break.
