A Ferran Torres brace, followed by a goal from Dani Olmo, helped Barcelona to a convincing 3-0 win over Getafe last night as the Catalans secured a second straight win in La Liga.
Despite it being expected to be a difficult match-up for Hansi Flick’s side, the Catalans dominated from start to finish and ensured that their win was not only comprehensive but convincing.
Getafe never really got going on the night, and it was all Barcelona from start to finish as they dominated possession, the proceedings and chances created from the get-go.
The win, eventually, helped them stay right behind Real Madrid with 13 of their possible 15 points in their kitty after five games. One downside, however, was that Flick did not rotate to the extent he would have liked to, given the hectic schedule ahead.
Barça Universal brings you three takeaways from Barcelona 3-0 Getafe.
Barcelona’s financial situation has prevented the club from reinforcing the centre-forward position despite Robert Lewandowski moving near the fag end of his career, and the situation led to the manager trusting Ferran Torres as his backup striker.
Given the Spaniard’s good performances last season, the manager began handing him more prominence as a starter this season. In fact, he even communicated with Lewandowski that both players would be treated as equals in his eyes.
Five games into the new season, there is good reason to believe that Torres is Barcelona’s best striker, and last night’s performance went a long way in reinforcing that school of thought.
In his 60 minutes on the field, Torres was lethal in the final third, and his strikes on goal held serious quality that David Soria could do nothing about.
His first goal came from a first-time shot off a Dani Olmo back-heel, which he hit with serious precision and power. 19 minutes later, he doubled the lead convincingly with a stunning strike in a 1v1 situation from a complicated angle.
Torres, in fact, could well have had a hat-trick and was unlucky to hit the post later in the first half. Given that Lewandowski also started and delivered a forgettable performance, the Spaniard is on his way to cementing his place as a regular starter.

Hansi Flick deployed Dani Olmo as a starter against Getafe last night, giving the Spaniard a chance to make a case to see more minutes given Fermin Lopez’s rise.
Moreover, the game tactically screamed out for Olmo’s profile, given Getafe’s notorious low-block and the need for a player who thrives in tight spaces. The only question, however, was whether he could find his form on the night, given his recent struggles.
Olmo not only started but also completed all 90 minutes against Jose Bordalas’ men and delivered a game-defining performance, announcing that he is indeed back to his best.
He was at the centre of Barcelona’s opening goal as he got on the end of Raphinha’s ball and smartly back-heeled it into Torres’ path. He then went on to score the team’s third goal on the night with a perfect finish, putting the result to bed.
With Fermin Lopez suffering an injury in the dying minutes of the game, Olmo could well earn far more regular action in the coming games, and his return to form could not have come at a better time.
Barcelona’s win over Newcastle United was highly praised because of the conditions under which it arrived – a team with major injury absences at a hostile away stadium against a style of football that is quite simply difficult to counter with possession-based play.
Last night, the team took down another opposition who play a style of football that Barcelona usually suffers against – making it two wins out of two games playing a low-block system.
Getafe, over the years, have frustrated Barcelona in La Liga, primarily at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. They have never beaten the Blaugrana in Catalonia, and that record continued to stand strong last night as Barcelona not only won but dominated them.
The fact that Hansi Flick’s side are looking so effective in attack without Alejandro Balde and Lamine Yamal speaks volumes about the quality they possess in the department, and even low blocks do not seem safe against them this season.
