Estadio Guadalajara hosted its third FIFA World Cup 2026 match on Tuesday night and continues to stand out as one of the venues delivering the best atmosphere in the tournament. Lifted by a crowd that packed the stands of La Fortaleza Rojiblanca, Colombia felt right at home and edged the Democratic Republic of Congo by the slimmest of margins.
Not even the rain could dampen the World Cup party in the Pearl of the West. From public transport all the way through the last-mile routes to the stadium, the sea of yellow was impossible to miss as it gathered around La Casa de los Mexicanos. The crowd also featured plenty of Chivahermanos, who took the chance to join the World Cup atmosphere and proudly wear their red-and-white jersey.
United by their Latin American roots, Colombians and Mexicans created the atmosphere long before kickoff. As fans made their way into the stadium, the main concourse echoed at full volume with Hermoso Cariño and Cielito Lindo.
Although in smaller numbers, a solid group of Congolese supporters positioned themselves right behind their team’s bench. Leading them was Lumumba Vea, one of the national team’s most iconic fans, known for attending matches in a suit and standing completely still for 90 minutes with his right arm raised. Tonight was no exception—he showed up in a striking red suit that made him stand out in the crowd.
Once the match got underway, the atmosphere matched World Cup standards. From the opening whistle, the Colombian crowd threw its full support behind their team, who came out pressing from the start, but ran into a wall named Lionel Mpasi. The goalkeeper literally flew on a couple of occasions to tip away shots from James Rodríguez and Luis Díaz. He also had a bit of “goalkeeper’s luck,” as VAR ruled out a header from Daniel Muñoz for a razor-thin offside.
After the break, the pattern stayed the same. Colombia controlled the tempo, although without the same sharpness they showed in the opening 20 minutes. Still, in the 75th minute, they finally got their reward: Muñoz popped up again in the box and smashed home a loose ball on the right side of the area—putting it in the back of the net.
Estadio Guadalajara erupted after the goal. Colombia pushed even harder and found the net twice more through Luis Díaz, first with a delicate chip over the keeper and then with a powerful curling shot past his diving effort. However, both goals were ruled out by VAR for offside.
The match ended with late drama. Camilo Vargas had to stretch fully to tip away what looked like a last-minute equalizer for Congo right at the death.
With this result, Colombia matched their 2014 Brazil World Cup start, winning their first two matches of the tournament. With victories over Uzbekistan and Congo, Los Cafeteros top Group K with six points and head into their clash against Portugal in strong position.
