Tim Ream, the USMNT captain at the 2026 World Cup, has retired from international football after the tournament, confirming the decision on Tuesday in St Louis.

He debuted in November 2010. Among outfield USMNT players, only DaMarcus Beasley spans longer between first and last caps. He was then ever present towards 2026, captaining the side and starting four matches at this summer's tournament, his final USMNT games.

Ream said he had once vowed not to retire from the national team until he quit the game entirely, but with younger players emerging and after discussions before the latest camp, he now regards this as retirement from US duty. He added that he is proud of 16 years' involvement and feels it is time to step away.

He lifted the CONCACAF Nations League in 2020 and 2024. Reflecting, he said there was no single defining moment, that the last four years were the most enjoyable, and that setbacks shaped the journey.

On his club future he has not decided, focusing on trying to win a trophy with Charlotte, with any decision to follow after the season.
