Timo Werner has joined San Jose Earthquakes in MLS, the club said in a statement on Thursday. The 29-year-old forward moves outside Europe for the first time.

The Germany international has 59 caps and 25 goals. He will seek to restart after a first half of the season in which he barely featured, appearing in only three brief cameos totalling 13 minutes.

Werner spent two seasons at Chelsea, scoring 23 goals between 2020 and 2022. He then returned to Leipzig, where his earlier spell from 2016 to 2020 yielded 95 goals.

Frequent injuries have hampered him in recent years. He was loaned to Tottenham last season but struggled to impress, recording 41 matches and three goals.

His most recent cap for the national team was in March 2023. The move offers a fresh start.
