Many different coaches deserve credit for making converted fullbacks out of Bayern Munich players who previously played different positions. It was Niko Kovac who once fashioned Canadian attacking winger Alphonso Davies (currently injured) into a left-back. Thomas Tuchel – in need of a right back – initially moved Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer back into the defensive line.

Current Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany has nevertheless taken things to a whole new level. Immediately after moving Laimer from the right-hand-side over to the left without explanation, Tom Bischof received an audition at left-back. The 20-year-old – fighting for minutes in a crowded midfield full of talented players – has started Bayern’s last two league fixtures at a position he’s never featured in before.

While the appointment may be temporary, Bischof made a strong sporting case on Saturday evening. A world-class pass from the former Hoffenheim man helped set-up Serge Gnabry’s 1-0 in the 25th-minute. Bayern board-member-for-sport Max Eberl praised Bischof’s “outstanding” performance. FCB teammate Jonathan Tah also seemed to think Bischof might consider remaining there.

As for Bischof himself, it appears as if the once-capped Germany international still wishes to return to the position he was signed to play. Bischof still expressed enthusiasm for his novel deployment when speaking in the mixed zone after Saturday night’s victory.

The coach wants to give me playing time because there is a lot of competition in midfield,” Bischof said. “I accept that and am happy about it because the position is interpreted differently than at other clubs. It’s more offensive; I can also shoot at the goal and participate in attacks. I really enjoy playing there.

I was supposed to be planned for the six slot,” Bischof was nevertheless sure to add. “And that time will come.
