Kai Wagner has recently left Birmingham City after a brief spell, and could a newly-promoted defender be the ideal replacement for the full-back?

Birmingham City will be looking to make a serious push for a top-six finish in the Championship next season, with the Blues preparing for their second consecutive season in the second-tier.

They finished tenth in the table last term, in what was their first season back in the Championship, after convincingly winning the League One title in the previous campaign.

It's set to be an interesting summer ahead at Birmingham, and the club's supporters will be hoping that Chris Davies can be given the funds to add reinforcements to his squad as Knighthead look to see their ambition and spending come to further fruition.

But one player that won't be featuring for the Championship side next season is Kai Wagner, whose brief stay in English football reached an early conclusion this month.

Wagner made the move back to the U.S., as he completed a return to former side, Philadelphia Union, which is where he spent seven years of his career before moving into English football with Birmingham City in January.

Wagner only signed for Birmingham in January 2026, and went on to make 18 appearances in total for the Blues in all competitions. He was contracted with the club until the summer of 2028, and so they won't have originally planned to lose him so early into his spell with them - though personal reasons necessitated the German's swift Stateside return.

The defender was a solid option for Chris Davies to have in his squad, and even though Birmingham are well-stocked in that area of their team, he's a player that is likely to need replacing, as he offered real quality when featuring for the Blues.

It'll be interesting to see how quickly Tom Wagner is to react in providing Davies with the funds to sign a replacement for the full-back, and if they can do that, then they'll be able to integrate them into the first-team squad before the new Championship season gets underway in August.

One player that could be the ideal choice to fill the void left by Wagner is Ryan Giles, who is currently on the books with newly-promoted Hull City in the Premier League.

Giles has been with the Tigers since 2024, when he arrived at the KCOM Stadium after a year-long spell with Luton Town. He made 37 appearances in total for Hull, as they clinched a surprising promotion into the top-flight.

The full-back could potentially struggle for a similar amount of game time next season though, as Hull are likely to strengthen their defensive options, as they look to avoid relegation back into the Championship next term.

This could mean that a return to the second-tier could be on the cards for the 26-year-old, who will surely be eager to play regularly in the prime years of his career.

A move to Birmingham City could prove to be the ideal move for all parties involved, and the Blues should waste no time in making their move for a player with proven Championship quality to fill that void, and Giles fits that description perfectly, especially when he's shown he can make a positive impact at both ends of the pitch.

Giles will be looking to have assurances over his place in the Hull City team first up, but if he can't get guaranteed minutes, then a temporary or permanent move elsewhere could be a good opportunity for him to showcase his talent with a different club.
