Cuca signalled he could hand Tomás Rincón a route back into the Santos squad after the 38-year-old asked to remain as an option this season.
According to Globo.com, the coach used his unveiling to say the Venezuelan midfielder had approached him about being involved, even though he had been out of the previous staff’s plans. He stopped short of naming the player, but acknowledged Rincón asked to be used during the campaign.
Santos had sought an amicable termination with Rincón, but talks did not progress. He has a contract until December 2026 and does not intend to leave.
Cuca said he was almost late for the press conference because a player wanted a meeting to declare he wished to stay and prove his worth despite being 38. He said such attitude showed spirit. He would offer opportunities and competition, with places going to those performing best in training and matches.
The club recently ended João Basso’s deal, as he was not in former coach Vojvoda’s plans. That exit irritated Neymar, a close friend of the defender. It has prompted Santos to take a more cautious view of Rincón’s situation, with the midfielder also close to the idol.
