Tomás Rincón has left Santos after agreeing an amicable contract termination last week and has bid farewell on social media. He was under contract until December and could sign a pre-contract elsewhere. He did not report back to CT Rei Pelé after the calendar pause.
The player said in a post that it had been an honour to wear one of world football’s great shirts, thanked fans for their affection and respect, wished a swift return to trophies, and added he will be a Santos supporter.
Rincón had hoped to feature under coach Cuca after the coach said he had asked for a chance. Three outings this year, against Red Bull Bragantino in the Paulistão and Cruzeiro and Bahia in the Brasileirão, his last minutes in April.
Although training as normal before the pause, he was behind Gustavo Henrique, João Schmidt and Willian Arão in midfield, and Samuel Pierri was promoted from the under-20s. Aged 38, he ends his spell after three years.
His exit frees up the number eight shirt. He leaves with two goals in 80 appearances. Signed in August 2023, he became a leader and late-season regular, scoring twice in the final 16 rounds of that year’s Brasileirão, then lost space under Carille in Série B.
Born in San Cristóbal, he started in 2007 with Zamora and Deportivo Táchira, then played for Hamburg, Genoa, Juventus, Torino and Sampdoria before joining Santos. He has been capped since 2008 and is Venezuela’s most-capped player.
