Tommy Watson looks set for a loan move to League One side Leicester City from Brighton and Hove Albion. Sunderland Echo understands Leicester are in pole position to land the 20-year-old, with talks progressing but no final agreement yet.

The winger became a Sunderland promotion hero with a stoppage-time winner at Wembley in last year’s Championship play-off final, his last act before a permanent switch to Brighton.

Since then he has struggled for regular minutes on the south coast, recording 10 senior appearances for the Seagulls, nine as a substitute. He spent the second half of last season on loan with Millwall in the Championship.

With the new campaign approaching, he could now be set for a stint in the third tier.

Leicester are seeking an immediate return to the Championship after relegation last season, finishing 23rd under Gary Rowett after starting the year with Marti Cifuentes.

In June they appointed Russell Martin as head coach and have added striker Conor Chaplin and goalkeeper Alex McCarthy on free transfers, plus Manchester City full-back Christian McFarlane on loan.
