Fikayo Tomori says Ademola Lookman is among the toughest opponents he has faced in Serie A and joked he was relieved the forward did not join Inter last summer.

The Milan centre-back will not be up against Lookman in tonight’s derby della Madonnina. The Nigeria international was close to the Nerazzurri, but Atalanta were unwilling to sell to a domestic rival for less than €50m.

Lookman spent the first part of the campaign in Bergamo, then completed a January switch to Atletico Madrid.

Tomori, a friend off the pitch, said he spoke to Lookman after the transfer collapsed. “I spoke to him when he stayed [at Atalanta], and I said: ‘If you went to Inter, we wouldn’t have been friends anymore,’” the English defender said, smiling.

He was speaking to The Athletic, and has spent five years at San Siro.
