Arsenal are ‘really working’ to try to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, and spoke to his agents yesterday, but would have to pay £100m to get a deal done on deadline day, it has been claimed in Italy.

The Gunners are fighting to end their long Premier League title drought this season and are well placed to do so.

They are admirers of Newcastle midfielder Tonali and it emerged early on deadline day that they had made an initial approach to the Magpies, but seen it knocked back.

Doing such a huge move with so little time remaining appears tough, but according to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, Arsenal are treating the swoop seriously and Newcastle do have an asking price despite not wanting to lose the Italian.

Schira wrote on X: “Arsenal have shown interest in Sandro Tonali and are really working to sign him.

“Offered a contract until 2031 with a very rich salary to convince Tonali to join #AFC.

“It’s not simple: the time is short. Newcastle ask £100M and would not want to sell the midfielder.”

The move has been played down in some quarters, but Schira is clear that the midfielder’s agents did speak to Arsenal yesterday.

He added: “Tonali’s agents have talked with Arsenal yesterday. It’s 100% confirmed. Arsenal’s interest are true, but Newcastle don’t want to sell him.”

Tonali, an Italy international, is a key part of Eddie Howe’s midfield at Newcastle and losing him mid-season would be tough for the boss and the club’s fans to stomach.

Newcastle’s season is still very much alive, with the club looking to climb up into the European spots in the Premier League and also still in the Champions League.

Tonali, 25, has played in every single one of Newcastle’s 24 Premier League games so far this season, going in the book on three occasions.

He was involved as Newcastle lost 2-1 at home to Arsenal earlier this season and even provided the assist for the Magpies’ goal on the day.

Tonali has regularly been targeted by Italian clubs keen to take him back to Serie A and last summer Juventus looked at a deal.
