Arsenal will not be signing Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali on Transfer Deadline Day, according to reports.

The Italy international had been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium as a replacement for the injured Mikel Merino.

Merino sustained a bone injury in his foot towards the end of the Gunners’ 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on 25th January. The club revealed that the 29-year-old requires surgery and will be sidelined for an “extended period”.

Tonali was reportedly identified as injury cover, but The Times report that “Newcastle insist there has been no contact” over a deal for the 25-year-old.

Sky Sports News add that the Magpies “don’t expect” to receive an offer for the player and “would not welcome” one in any case. His current contract with the club runs until 2029 and he is viewed as a key part of Eddie Howe’s plans.

The Independent’s Miguel Delaney also reports that, while Arsenal have been “surveying options”, they will “more likely leave it” as “there’s an awareness Max Dowman can step up” in a defensive midfield role. The 16-year-old has made five appearances in all competitions this season, predominantly as an attacking midfielder. He recently committed his future to the club by signing a pre-contract agreement.

Newcastle are reluctant to allow any of their midfielders leave St. James’ Park at the moment, with Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Lewis Miley all dealing with injuries. The club rejected an approach for Joe Willock from Fulham last week.
