Tonda Eckert hints at Ross Stewart return as Southampton seek second striker | OneFootball

Tonda Eckert says Southampton will add a second striker and has suggested Ross Stewart could yet return, in an interview as the Championship season approaches. According to Sainstmarching.com, he set out the need up front and left the door open for the Scotsman.

The controversial German addressed Spygate, saying he has required police protection amid the fallout. An FA ban remains possible, yet he struck a positive tone while leading pre-season.

Southampton are short at centre-forward after Stewart failed to agree a new contract and is a free agent. New £9m arrival Lewis Dobbin can operate wide or as a number 10 behind Cyle Larin, while other options such as Will Lankshear have been linked.

"I'm still in touch with Ross [Stewart]. It's possible [that he could return]. We definitely need a second striker. I think that is very clear. “There will definitely be a second striker. Let's see who that will be."

Stewart scored 11 goals last season in all competitions despite limited game time. Any return could divide opinion given the contract saga, although strong early form might soften views.
