In a testament to a career that transcended the world of sports, the hallowed grounds of the Santiago Bernabéu recently hosted a ceremony of national significance. Toni Kroos, the revered former Real Madrid and Germany midfielder, was honoured with one of Germany's highest civilian awards, the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit, marking a pinnacle moment in his post-retirement life.
The distinction, awarded for his outstanding service to the nation, was not merely mailed to the footballing icon. In a move that underscored the weight of the honour, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier personally travelled to Madrid to bestow the cross upon the 35-year-old. The ceremony served as a powerful capstone on an international career that saw Kroos become a cornerstone of German football for over a decade.
From his debut in 2010, Kroos amassed 114 caps for Germany, a period of service marked by 17 goals and 21 assists. His most glorious contribution, however, came in 2014, when his meticulous play in midfield was instrumental in securing the FIFA World Cup for his nation. While his club triumphs with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are the stuff of legend, this state honour elevates his legacy beyond trophies, recognizing the pride and unity he brought to Germany. The award arrives just months after the maestro concluded his illustrious playing career in July 2024, closing one chapter while a new, distinguished one begins.
