Toronto FC has announced a significant development in their roster by securing a contract renewal with Luka Gavran, a talented goalkeeper who has become an essential part of the team.
Gavran has signed a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2027, with an option to extend further based on his performance and mutual agreement. Since his debut in 2023, Gavran has gradually established himself as the second-choice goalkeeper, providing a solid backup to veteran Sean Johnson.
This renewal is a strategic move by Toronto FC, ensuring stability in a crucial position as they continue to build a competitive team under head coach Robin Fraser.
The 24-year-old Canadian has shown promise, especially during the 2024 season, where he played 13 matches, conceded 21 goals, and kept four clean sheets. His performance over more than 1,000 minutes of play last season has left a positive impression on the coaching staff and fans alike.
With Sean Johnson, the team’s current first-choice goalkeeper, approaching the end of his contract in December 2025, Toronto FC is preparing for a smooth transition. Johnson, now 35, has been a reliable presence since joining the club in 2003. However, as he nears the twilight of his career, the focus has shifted to grooming Gavran as his successor.
Gavran’s new contract not only reflects the club's faith in his abilities but also highlights their commitment to building a strong foundation for the future.
As part of Fraser’s project, Gavran is expected to take on more responsibilities, potentially becoming the starting goalkeeper once Johnson steps down. This strategic planning ensures that Toronto FC remains competitive and well-equipped for the challenges ahead in the MLS 2025 season.
