Tottenham Hotspur head into their Champions League clash with Villarreal carrying a significant injury list. New manager Thomas Frank has already dealt with disruption to his squad, yet results have been encouraging, with three wins from their opening four Premier League fixtures. The 3-0 victory away at West Ham restored momentum after the pre-international break defeat to Bournemouth, but fitness concerns remain at the forefront.
Dominic Solanke continues to be a major doubt after missing out against West Ham. The striker, who had been expected to play, was forced out due to an ankle problem picked up prior to the international break.
“Everyone returned from international duty well,” Frank confirmed. “Always positive, very happy about that. Dom will not be available still, I don’t expect it to be too long but he will not be available for this game. I think right now we are doing everything we can, the medical team, to get on top of it and that’s what we’re focusing on. I get a feeling he is not too far away, but he’s just fallen short for this week.”

Tottenham hope Solanke can be back in contention before the end of September, with his recovery seen as pivotal for the rhythm of Frank’s attack.
Dejan Kulusevski shocked supporters during the break with a social media post showing a behind-the-scenes image from his knee surgery. Captioned “warning for sensitive content … thank god it happened so I could see it clear”, the update illustrated the seriousness of his condition.
Despite the setback, Kulusevski has maintained a positive outlook. “The status is great,” he told Viaplay. “I wake up every day with the same hunger. I will be back in the very, very near future. If everything goes according to plan, I am very confident that I will be back in two-three months.”
Official estimates place his return closer to early 2026, meaning Tottenham Hotspur will be without one of their most creative players for much of the campaign.
Midfield dynamo Yves Bissouma is yet to make an appearance this season, initially due to disciplinary reasons, before a training injury extended his absence. Frank has indicated he could return before September closes.
Defender Radu Dragusin has resumed training after his ACL injury, though he has been omitted from the Champions League squad and may not feature competitively until late 2025. New signing Kota Takai remains unavailable with a plantar fascia problem, while James Maddison is facing the prospect of missing the majority of the season following knee surgery, with a likely return date of April 2026.
Thomas Frank’s early tenure has been defined by juggling results and rehabilitation. Tottenham Hotspur have responded well in the league, but the prolonged absence of players such as Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski could test the squad’s depth in the months ahead. With Champions League commitments now demanding equal focus, Spurs will be relying heavily on those fit and available to maintain momentum until reinforcements return.
